I need a saddle for dressage?
I am looking for a dressage saddle. Price doesn't matter because if its wicked expensive, I'll find it used. Really what I need is the utmost comfort for the horse, durability, and it has to be fairly low-maintinance as far as saddle fitting goes because there isn't one near me but I can have wither tracings, but not the wool. And it has to be balanced enough to do higher level movements. Thanks.
I have a Wintec Isabelle and I love it. I know a lot of people don't like Wintec, and I definately wouldn't show hunters in one. But in the dressage world a Wintec is perfectly fine even for upper level showing. They are inexpensive, comfortable, durable, and fit well. My Wintec fits just about every horse I've tried it on. Plus with the interchangeable gullets you can further customize the fit yourself as your horse changes. I find the Isabelle puts me in a really good riding position, and the horses go very well in it.
I've had some expensive saddles in my life. I had a custom made Schleese dressage saddle (close to $4000) and an Amerigo (a $4000 saddle new but I got it used), so I know what an expensive leather dressage saddle feels like. I've also ridden in my trainer's Windsor, Passier, and Stuuben saddles. I like my Wintec the best of all of them. My trainer hates it though, so a lot depends on body type. She's tall and lean, I'm short and fat. You need to find a saddle that fits your body, not one that is just perfect for somebody else. Also, I like the Wintec Pro dressage OK, but the lower end Wintecs are not so well balanced for the rider and will not help you with your position.
Three of my friends recently bought Trilogy saddles and they all love them. All 3 of these women are excellent riders with superb positions, so I trust their judgement. If they say it's the best saddle they sat in when looking for saddles, then it really was. My current trainer swears by Neidersuess (spelling?). Again, you just have to sit in the different saddles and find the one that works best for you. Just like you might know that you wear size 8 blue jeans, but that doesn't guarantee that any particular size 8 brand of jeans will fit you well, different saddles fit different people.
